QR Code Analytics: What to Track and Why It Matters

Key takeaway

Most QR platforms show you a scan count and call it analytics. Real analytics tell you which campaign variant won, which city drives the most conversions, and what time of day your audience is most active.

Why scan count alone is misleading

A QR code on a busy street corner will rack up scans regardless of creative quality. Without context — device, time, location, referrer — you can't tell whether your campaign is actually working or you just got lucky with foot traffic.

The metrics that matter

  • Unique vs total scans: Total counts every scan; unique approximates distinct devices using a privacy-safe identifier. A ratio close to 1:1 suggests broad reach; a high ratio suggests repeat engagement.
  • Time series: Hourly and daily breakdowns reveal when your audience is most active. Align re-targeting with peak windows.
  • Country / city: Geo data helps you localise future campaigns. QRoute uses privacy-safe IP lookup — city-level, never street-level, and never stored longer than required.
  • Device and OS: Are iOS users converting better than Android? Should your landing page be optimised for mobile-first?
  • A/B destination performance: Route 50% of scans to variant A and 50% to variant B. Analytics tell you which one wins.

Analytics must never delay a redirect

QRoute enqueues scan events asynchronously. The redirect fires immediately; the analytics record follows in the background. If the analytics pipeline is under load, your users never notice.

Privacy by design

QRoute does not store precise IP addresses. Geo lookup is performed at ingest, the result (country, region, city) is stored, and the IP is discarded. Bot filtering removes automated scanner traffic so your numbers reflect real human scans.

Exporting and reporting

Export raw events as CSV for your own data warehouse, or schedule a weekly summary email for stakeholders. Both are available on Business and Enterprise plans.
